A name is one of the first choices you make when creating a character. It can be humorous, heroic, mysterious, deeply personal, or something that only makes sense to the friends who have adventured with you for years. In World of Warcraft: Forever, character names gain more room to breathe through a new two-name structure designed for a larger, realmless Azeroth. Instead of relying on a single name tied to a specific realm, each character will have two names. Together, those parts form a full name that is unique within a region, creating more possibilities for players who want something that fits their character, history, or story in Azeroth. A Name of Your Own You can think of the system as giving your character a first name and a last or surname. If another player has already chosen a first name you love, that does not necessarily mean it is unavailable. What matters is the complete two-name combination. For example, two characters could share the same first name as long as their full names are different. A familiar first name can still become distinct when paired with a second name that creates a unique regional combination. Unique Across a Region Because World of Warcraft: Forever is built around a larger, realmless structure, character names are handled at a larger scale. Your full character name needs to be distinct within your region, rather than only within a single realm, supporting a world where more players can adventure together while names remain recognizable over time. That regional uniqueness is part of the broader goal of preserving the feeling of community in Azeroth. As you level, quest, gather, and explore—or meet again around a campsite fire—familiar names may stand out over time. A name can become more than text over a character’s head; it can become someone you remember from a dungeon run, a difficult quest, a guild recruitment message, a quiet wave on the road, or even a new addition to your friends list. Build an Identity That Fits The new naming structure is meant to expand player choice rather than narrow it. You can choose a first name that fits your character’s fantasy, personality, or long-running identity, then use the second name to make that identity more specific—whether you are creating a new adventurer, carrying forward a favorite name, or building a set of connected characters. This also gives roleplayers and story-minded players more flexibility. A second name can suggest a family, a place, a reputation, a title-like identity, or another word that helps the full name feel right. For example, characters named Asha Brightvale, Thalen Brightvale, and Mira Brightvale could share the same family-style second name while each keeps a different first name. A guild or adventuring group could also use a shared naming theme to create a sense of belonging, provided each complete two-name combination remains available within the region. If you prefer a simpler look in-game, you can turn off the display of your second name in the game world. Open the Game Menu by pressing (Escape), select Options, then Nameplates, and click the checkbox for “My Secondary Name.” Your secondary name will no longer display in the world, but it will still appear in chat. A Few Naming Guidelines Some name rules still apply. Character names must continue to adhere to the in-game code of conduct for names. Certain names, words, spellings, and repeated-character patterns may be restricted, including names that could create confusion, impersonate Blizzard or the World of Warcraft team, or conflict with existing naming policies. The system can also evaluate both parts of the name together, so separating a restricted word across the two names will not necessarily make it valid. As with character names today, desired names cannot be guaranteed. Early Name Reservation will be available from October 27 through November 3, 2026, for eligible upgrade purchases. During that window, names will be reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. If the full name you want is already taken or does not meet the naming requirements, you will need to choose another combination—or take a chance with the trusty in-game random name generator.
