Take A Note – Your Personal Notebook Inside WoW

Ever wished you could write something down without tabbing out of the game?
Take A Note gives you a flexible in-game notebook that just does its job: helping you remember things while you stay fully immersed in Azeroth.

Raid tactics, farming routes, weekly to-dos, RP scripts, shopping lists, random ideas - write down whatever you want, whenever you want. Everything stays neatly stored inside the game.

📌 Minimap Button  

• Gives you quick access to the notebook window 
• Shows a small tooltip with helpful info  
• You can show/hide the minimap button with /tan mmb show or /tan mmb hide  
• Use /tan or /tan help to display all available chat commands

• /tan reset to put it back in the center

📋 Note Mirror Button

• Opens a second mirror window that displays your current note in a clean, read-only frame with the same font and font size  
• Useful as an on-screen reference while playing - keep tactics, RP text, or notes visible without switching tabs  
• Resizable, movable, transparency adjustable, and remembers its position  
• You can hide the mirror note options in the normal options menu  

🎯 Smart List Handling  

• Easily sort your notes by holding Ctrl + Left Click and dragging them up or down  

🔍 Search Field  

• A built-in search field lets you type any word or phrase and quickly look through your entire notebook  
• Use the up and down arrow buttons to jump to the previous or next match across all notes in all categories (hold down the button for auto search)  

☑️ Checkbox Tools  

• Put a checkmark box in a line with Ctrl + Enter or write at the beginning of a line: [ ] 
• Right-clicking that line will toggle an X in the checkbox; another right-click removes it  
• Ctrl + Right Click on the list button will check/uncheck all boxes at once - perfect for to-do lists  

📡 Share Notes In-Game  

Take A Note includes a built-in share system via WoW's addon chat channel. Open it via Tools -> Share.

You can:  

• Send Note 
• Send Note as Note Mirror 
• Send Category

Targets:  

• Player (Name-Realm)  
• Guild  
• Party  
• Raid  

Receiver safety controls:  

• Enable/disable incoming shares  
• Allow all incoming, or filter by rules  
• Allow by name whitelist  
• Allow by Guild/Party/Raid channel  
• Manage allowed names in an in-game list (right-click to remove entries)

Category share behavior:  

• Large categories are split into multiple parts automatically  
• Parts are reassembled on the receiver side  
• Receiver selects destination category early  
• If destination is not empty, a confirmation popup is shown before overwrite  

Reliability features:  

• Chunking, ACK/retry, sequential part delivery  
• Better handling for bigger transfers  
• Raid sending restriction: only Raid Leader or Assistants can send to raid  

🔑 Keyboard Shortcut  

You can assign a hotkey to open/close Take A Note:

1. Press Esc -> Keybindings in the game menu.  
2. Scroll to the "Take A Note" category.  
3. Click the "Toggle Window" entry and press your desired key to bind it.

💾 How Saving Works (Important!)  

There's a Save/Reload button - clicking it will reload your UI.  
This is intentional: WoW addons can only write permanent data to disk during a ReloadUI or logout.

You can type as much as you want and everything stays in memory - but the reload ensures the note is actually saved in your saved variables.

⚙️ Small, Simple Options Panel  

Lets you configure:  

• Font  
• Font size  
• Maximum number of categories (press enter after you changed the category number)  
• Show or hide the options in the note mirror frame when hovered  
• Window scaling - freely adjust the overall size of the notebook window to your preference  
• Resizable text area - enable or disable manual resizing of the note editor, giving you full control over how much space your text gets. Change the size with dragging the triangle on the bottom right.  
• Window Transparency Slider: Adjusts the opacity of the entire window - goes back to full transparency when hovered with the cursor  
• Background Transparency Slider: Controls how transparent the background is, allowing you to tune readability vs. visibility of the world behind it  

🧪 Run Code  

Take A Note can execute the entire content of your current note as Lua code.  
Use Tools -> Run Code to instantly run full Lua blocks - from simple prints to multi-line functions.

✈️ Import & Export System  

Quickly share your notes, categories, or entire notebook with other players - or create backups for yourself.

The Import/Export window lets you turn any note into a compact text string that you can copy, paste, send to friends, or store outside the game. You can also import these strings back into your notebook with full control over where the data goes.

💬 Send Notes To Chat

Send your currently open note directly into any known WoW chat channel via Tools -> Send to Chat.

Features:

• Automatically splits long text into safe chat-sized chunks
• Preserves line breaks by sending your note line by line
• Supports notes up to 32,000 characters
• Handles chat throttling automatically
• Uses Secure Send support for protected chat situations when needed
• Supports whispers to Name or Name-Realm
